I keep hearing that AI will run our ads end to end, and we can finally relax.
ChatGPT Ads just expanded to 26 new countries. Meta, Google and Amazon are all pushing automated rewrites and AI-led media buying. The platforms are not hiding it anymore: give us the budget, we will handle the rest.
Fifteen years in marketing teaches you one thing: the platform's incentive is your spend, not your ROI.
I have run campaigns across FMCG, ecommerce and fintech, and the pattern has repeated with every wave of automation. When media planning tools arrived, the planners who understood the business did better, not worse. When programmatic took over buying, the marketers who understood audiences pulled ahead. Automation raises the floor. It does not raise the ceiling.
The marketers who win will not be the ones who resist this. They will be the ones who use the automation, and still know exactly why a campaign worked.
Creative thinking. Sharp audience logic. Clean measurement. That part cannot be outsourced.
So the question I ask of every automated campaign is simple: if the platform switched this off tomorrow, could I explain what it did and why? If the answer is no, I am not running a strategy. I am renting one.
The tool can run the campaign. It cannot own the outcome.
